CAD Designing

I began by using 3D modeling software to verify measurements and visualize the display's final appearance. This step was crucial for ensuring that all components would fit together seamlessly and that the final design would meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. By creating a detailed digital model, I was able to identify potential issues early in the process, allowing for adjustments before moving on to the manufacturing phase. This not only saved time and resources but also ensured that the final product aligned perfectly with the initial concept and expectations.

Begin Manufacturing

Once satisfied with the measurements, we began constructing the outer display using wood and recycled acrylic, finishing it with a black paint. The black color was strategically chosen to enhance the visibility of the illuminated displays, ensuring they stood out and captured attention as the award show was going to be brightly lit up.

Manufacturing the displays

We began manufacturing the acrylic displays, leaving a section unglued to allow access for LED installation. This process involved laser cutting the parts and gluing them together to create a 3D structure.

Installing electronics

After completing the models, we installed the electronics. The slightly transparent acrylics made the models pop, with the internal lighting enhancing their appearance. Each model was designed with a discreet hole in its leg for threading the wires, ensuring they remained hidden and maintaining a clean, polished look for the display.

Final Checks

Once assembled, we conducted final checks to ensure everything was functioning as intended and met our quality standards. This review allowed us to assess the display’s appearance and make any necessary adjustments. Additionally, we identified potential weak points that could be at risk during transport, enabling us to plan ahead and bring any necessary tools as a backup for the day of the event.

Challenges and Solutions

Weight Issue: Although most aspects went according to plan, we overlooked the bird model's top-heavy weight.

solution: We shifted the head further back to center its gravity, allowing it to stand upright.

Color Adjustment: After inspecting the initial CAD model, we decided to have the three birds in different colors to highlight the variety of recyclable acrylics, which was the display's purpose.

Wiring Complications: During the assembly, we encountered a challenge with the wiring for the LED lights. The wires were too short, making it difficult to thread them through the models' legs without being visible.

Solution: we sourced longer wires and used heat-shrink tubing to neatly bundle and conceal them, ensuring they remained hidden while still providing the necessary connectivity.
